Empowerment Everywhere: How Celebrating International Women's Day is positive for everyone!

Hey there, beautiful souls! Can you feel the energy in the air?

Four women making hearts with their hands

International Women's Day 2024 is here, and I couldn't be more excited to celebrate the incredible strength, resilience, and achievements of women all around the globe.

For me, it's crucial to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. It's not just about celebrating women; it's about acknowledging the progress we've made and recognising the work that still needs to be done to achieve true gender equality.

So, why is International Women's Day still relevant in today's world? Well, despite the progress we've made, women continue to face systemic barriers and discrimination in various aspects of their lives. From the gender pay gap to lack of representation in leadership positions, there's no denying that there's still work to be done.

But here's the thing: we're stronger together. We are a community and as such have the power to uplift and support each other in countless ways. Here are three simple yet powerful ways we can do just that:

  1. Amplify Each Other's Voices: Let's make a conscious effort to listen to and amplify the voices of women from diverse backgrounds. Whether it's sharing stories on social media, promoting other women’s work, or simply offering a listening ear, let's uplift each other and ensure that all women's voices are heard and valued.

  2. Mentorship and Support: We’ve all got different skill sets and experiences to draw on - why not pool our talents for the good of all? In fostering a culture of mentorship and support, women can help one another succeed. Whether it's offering career advice, sharing resources, or providing emotional support, let's be there for each other every step of the way.

  3. Challenge Stereotypes and Biases: Let's challenge stereotypes and biases that hold women back and perpetuate inequality. Whether it's calling out sexism in the workplace, advocating for inclusive policies, or simply leading by example, let's work together to break down barriers and create a more equitable world for all.

And here's the beautiful thing about feminism as I see it: it benefits everyone, I mean everyone.

By exploring the origins and traditions of rigid gender roles and having open conversation about what masculinity* means today, feminism can create space for all of us to express ourselves fully, without fear of judgment or ridicule. By promoting a reality where women are allowed to lead and where men are allowed to cry, we all get to share in the benefits of true equality.

The statistics on male suicide speak for themselves when discussing the isolating experience of ‘manning up’. I could go on, but I’m veering away from Women’s Day. And I could also write an entirely separate blog on this worthwhile subject.

Together, today, let us encourage healthy, egalitarian relationships and foster a more compassionate and inclusive society for all.

So, as we celebrate International Women's Day this year, let's remember the power of solidarity and collective action. Let's continue to support and uplift each other, not just on this day, but every day. I believe we can create a world where every woman and girl can thrive and fulfill her true potential.

Happy International Women's Day! Let's make it a day to remember.

*I love and highly recommend Rylan Clark’s podcast ‘How to Be a Man’, and the way he invites men to explore, without judgement, what masculinity means to them.

I also found this TED talk ‘Boys won’t be boys. Boys will be what we teach them to be’ extremely useful. Let me know if you do, too!
